You might or might not have heard of a Home Education mission statement — it’s one of those things that can easily be overlooked because not everyone thinks they need one. Well, let me tell you that having one is better than not having one.
You might or might not have heard of a Home Education mission statement — it’s one of those things that can easily be overlooked because not everyone thinks they need one. Well, let me tell you that having one is better than not having one.
So, what exactly is a mission statement? Here’s what I can summarise it into:
Your Home Education mission statement should be unique to your family and reinforce your values, goals and your children’s needs.
Think about all the times you experience burnout. You probably can’t focus or remember what you’re doing or what you need to get done. You might even forget your reasons for home educating; you may even start regretting your decision and want to give up. Well, a mission statement can help you to remember your WHY. Why you chose to home educate, and also what you want your children to get out of it. Your mission statement should influence your outlook and help you to focus on what matters to your family.
Your mission statement can be as short or as long as you like. Think of it as something that you have up on your wall to look at and refer back to when you need it. Often, most people will write a few sentences or a short paragraph. Some people might want to go more in depth. As long as it includes what you need to help remind you of your reasons for home educating and your home education goals, then that’s all you need.
There are a number of things that you might want to summarise in your mission statement. These include:
Your mission statement should be used when making all your home education decisions. For example, if you decide to change learning styles, refer to your mission statement to help you decide which one would be best for your child based on your values and their needs.
You should also use your mission statement for motivation and staying focused. It will help you to keep going even when things seem difficult.
We hope that helps! Remember to make your mission statement personal and unique! If still in doubt, give us a shout (email!).
