8 Reasons Why People Are AGAINST Homeschooling

There are people who are against homeschooling for a number of reasons that are valid to them, and it’s often interesting to find out what these reasons are and why.

Home Education, including homeschooling, is widely misunderstood, especially by those who do not know much about it. But there are also people who are against homeschooling for a number of reasons that are valid to them, and it’s often interesting to find out what these reasons are and why.

What we must remember is that everyone is entitled to their opinion, whether we agree with it or not. And, sometimes, understanding why people are against homeschooling can allow us to accept different perspectives.

1. They don’t understand homeschooling

One of the main reasons why someone might be against homeschooling is for the simple fact of not fully understanding what it is or how to do it. There are a lot of misconceptions about homeschooling and it’s normal for people to be reluctant about something that might be a completely new concept to them.

2. It’s not right for their family

For many people, homeschooling just isn’t right for their family. It may be because their values don’t align with certain aspects of educating at home or that their children are already thriving in school.

3. They don’t have the time to homeschool

Some people just simply don’t have the time to homeschool, whether that be because of work commitments or health, and it might not be a viable option for them.

4. Financial burden

Although it can be done on a budget, there are extra costs with homeschooling that you would get for free at school. And nowadays, many families need to have both partners working, so homeschooling can become more of a financial burden. It’s understandable that some people are against homeschooling because of the financial impact it will have on them.

5. Quality of learning

People may be against homeschooling due to believing that the quality of learning is not as good. Whereas in school you have qualified teachers, parents often have to rely on teaching through the use of other resources or hiring tutors, which can become quite costly.

6. Worries about isolation

The main concern about homeschooling is the lack of socialisation. People often assume that because children are not with their peers every day, they may struggle to maintain friendships. A lack of socialisation can quickly lead to isolation, which makes things difficult for both children and parents.

7. Lack of access to resources

Not everyone will have the same access to resources as others, which is why many parents favour schools for the amount of quality resources that they have. Parents also do not have to worry about finding certain resources or spending too much money on them.

8. Not having the right support

Another reason why people might be against homeschooling is not having the right support or having a lack of support. Whereas a school has teachers and special teams dedicated to supporting students, the responsibility of homeschooling falls on the parents’ shoulders and often it can feel quite overwhelming and isolating.
